As one of the most influential novels in the history of British literature, Tess of the D’Urbervilles has aroused widespread concern since its publication. The tragic heroine Tess as one of Hardy’s most sympathetic protagonists has also been discussed extensively. Through the analysis of the element of patriarchal morality, economy and law in Tess’s time from the perspective of feminism, this paper attempts to figure out the reasons of Tess’s inevitable tragedy under the social background of patriarchy, so as to enrich the understanding of this literary canon.
